Bondarenko will face Ukrainian qualifier Yuliana Fedak in the second round.

Also winning was two-time Paris champion Amelie Mauresmo. She defeated American Julie Ditty 6-1, 6-2 and will face Eleni Daniilidou of Greece in the second round. Mauresmo reached the semis last year before losing to Petrova in three sets.

Top-seeded Anna Chakvetadze will face Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy in the second round after Dechy defeated Shuai Peng of China 6-4, 7-6(8).
