Davenport, Darcis capture Memphis titles
American Lindsay Davenport won her 55th career title and her second of 2008 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Olga Govortsova in the finals of the Cellular South Cup. After losing eight games in her first match, Davenport only lost a total of 10 games in her next four matches. With the title, Davenport moved up to #36 in the world, which is up 10 spots from where she was last week.
Also winning in Memphis was unseeded Steve Darcis. The 23-year old Belgian defeated Robin Soderling 6-3, 7-6(5) in the finals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships to win his second career ATP title. He is now ranked #46 in the world, which is his new career high.
Dementieva wins in Dubai
Russian Elena Dementieva won her first title of 2008, and the ninth of her career, with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in the finals of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships. Dementieva is now 9-11 lifetime in finals and 4-5 against Kuznetsova in her career.
Stakhovsky captures first title in Zagreb
Ukrainian lucky loser Sergiy Stakhovsky, playing in his first career ATP singles final, beat top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic 7-5, 6-4 to claim the PBZ Zagreb Indoor title. Stakhovsky came into the tournament ranked #209 in the world, and is the first lucky loser to win an ATP title since Christian Miniussi at Sao Paulo in 1991. He is now the fifth player since 1978 to win a title as a lucky loser. With the win, Stakhovsky moved up to #123 in the world which is his new career high.
Almagro wins second title of 2008
Nicolas Almagro won his second title in three weeks with a 6-1, 7-6(1) victory over top-seeded David Nalbandian in the finals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco. This is the fourth title of Almagro’s career, and he is now 15-3 on the season. He also improved his ranking to a new career high of #25 in the world.
