Haas beats Roddick; Sharapova stays perfect
Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy alum Tommy Haas defeated sixth-seeded Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells. Haas, who has struggled this year with injuries, has seen his ranking plummet to #36 in the world (he began the year ranked #12). He is now 7-3 in his career against Roddick, and has now beaten him three consecutive times. Roddick came into the tournament playing great tennis, having already won two tournaments this year. Haas will now face #30 Fernando Verdasco in the third round, whom he is 1-0 against.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal has reached the third round, after defeating Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. Now, he will face American Donald Young after Young upset #32 Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2. This will be the first career meeting between Nadal and Young.
Top-seeded Roger Federer won his second round match over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-2. Federer, who lost in the second round last year to Guillermo Canas, will now face Nicolas Mahut in the third round. Federer is 1-0 against Mahut, with that win coming in 2006 at Wimbledon.
Tenth-seeded Tomas Berdych and twelfth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez were both eliminated over the weekend. Berdych lost to Stanislas Wawrinka 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 and Gonzalez fell to Mario Ancic 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Wawrinka will now face #18 Marcos Baghdatis, while Ancic faces #22 Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Other second round winners included: #3 Novak Djokovic, #4 Nikolay Davydenko, #5 David Ferrer, #7 David Nalbanidan, #8 Richard Gasquet, #9 James Blake, #11 Andy Murray, #13 Mikhail Yozhny, #14 Paul-Henri Mathieu, #15 Tommy Robredo, #16 Guillermo Canas, #17 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, #18 Marcos Baghdatis, #19 Carlos Moya, #20 Ivo Karlovic, #21 Juan Monaco, #23 Ivan Ljubicic, #24 Lleyton Hewitt, #27 Philipp Kohlschreiber, #28 Juan Ignacio Chela, and #29 Radek Stepanek.
On the women’s side, players on the bottom half of the draw have already advanced to the fourth round. Among those are defending champion and fifth-seed Daniela Hantuchova, second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, and fourth-seeded Maria Sharapova.
Hantuchova defeated Jie Zheng 6-4, 6-2 and will now face #21 Sania Mirza of India. Mirza defeated #9 Shahar Peer 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-3. Hantuchova is 1-0 against Mirza in her career, with that win coming at Sydney in 2006. The winner of this match will get either #4 Maria Sharapova or #15 Alona Bondarenko in the quarterfinals.
Sharapova, who is now a perfect 16-0 on the season, defeated #25 Eleni Daniilidou 7-5, 6-3 in the third round. Sharapova’s opponent, Bondarenko crushed #17 Amelie Mauresmo 6-1, 6-2 in the third round, and will be facing Sharapova for the first time her career.
Staying on the bottom half of the draw, #2 Svetlana Kuznetsova and #10 Agnieszka Radwanska are the only other seeded players left. Kuznetsova will face Danish sensation Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round. Kuznetsova outlasted #28 Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the third round, while Wozniacki pounded Aiko Nakamura 6-0, 6-2. This will be the first meeting between Kuznetsova and Wozniacki.
The last fourth-round match on the bottom half of the draw is between the aforementioned Radwanska and American Ashley Harkleroad. Radwanska defeated Shuai Peng 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, while Harkleroad upset #8 Dinara Safina 7-5, 6-2. This is the first career meeting between Radwanska and Harkleroad.
On the top half of the draw they are still in the third round. Top-seeded Ana Ivanovic will face #31 Tathiana Garbin, and #3 Jelena Jankovic will have to deal with #27 Ai Sugiyama.
Seventh-seeded Nicole Vaidisova was upset by Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in the second round. Dellacqua will face #32 Tamira Paszek in the third round.
Other winners included: #6 Marion Bartoli, #12 Vera Zvonareva, #13 Francesca Schiavone, #19 Flavia Pennetta, #20 Anabel Medina Garrigues, and #24 Lindsay Davenport
